Ashridge Care Home
key description: extension and refurbishment of care home
client: Private Client
borough: Dacorum Borough Council, Hertfordshire
Ashridge Care Home is a beautifully kept 16th century three storey care home set within peaceful scenic grounds, surrounded by beautiful countryside of the National Trust Estate of Ashridge.
Unit One Architects were employed to extend and refurbish the care home, in order to double the number of bed spaces, and provide up-to-date facilities for the residents.
There were a number of inherent constraints and challenges to overcome with this project as the care home is within a listed building. The requirements of dementia patients had to also be considered from the outset.
The Care Home.
A horseshoe extension was designed that carefully connected back to the listed building with glazed links. The extension provided 19 additional en-suite bedrooms, along with communal living spaces, a beauty salon and central peace garden.
The glazed links and corridors allowed for a circuit that the patients could walk without coming to a dead end.
The extension is of a traditional design, to match that of the original building and to tie in with the surrounding properties. The care home extension was also positioned to make use of the beautiful woodland setting providing views out on to landscape.
As part of the external works, a walkway through the woodland was provided, with various benches positioned to take in the views.
